BENNETT ASTROVE
String Adjunct-Faculty, violin Violinist and conductor Bennett Astrove is an active performer and teacher in Boston, Massachusetts. Currently a member of Philharmonia Boston, he was named the winner of the University of South Florida concerto competition, finalist in the Rosen Schaffel concerto competition, and performed as the assisistant concertmaster of The Chamber Orchestra of the
Triangle in Raleigh, North Carolina. |
An ardent and dedicated chamber musician, Mr. Astrove has been a guest of the Rutenberg Chamber Music concert series and the Violin Shop of Tampa concert series, and performed on the faculty artist concerts at Brancaleoni International Music Festival and Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival. He served as a violinist in the Chrysalis Quartet, the resident quartet at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and that institution’s Summer Strings program, and as the violinist of The President’s Trio, the University of South Florida’s premiere graduate chamber ensemble.
As a promoter of new music, he has performed as a member of NU Music Ensemble, and has appeared in the Terroir and Tampa Homegrown concert series. As the conductor of the University of South Florida New Music Consortium, he premiered numerous compostitions in addition to leading performances including works of Igor Stravinsky and Edgar Varese. A versatile educator, Mr. Astrove has held the position of teaching assistant the University of South Florida, and teaching artist with The Florida Orchestra and the Winston-Salem Symphony. He also served Forsyth County, NC as a member of ArtistCorps, a multifaceted arts outreach initiative whose goal is to provide exposure, instruction, and arts integration to a population of high need pre-k through 12th grade students. In the spring of 2019, Mr. Astrove became a certified instructor of hatha yoga. He has worked as a teacher in conventional yoga studios and as an instructor to musicians, including classes at the Brancaleoni International Music Festival.
Mr. Astrove holds degrees from University of South Florida, University of North Carolina School of the Arts. His major violin teachers have included Bayla Keyes, Kevin Lawrence, and Carolyn Stuart, and his principal conducting mentor has been William Wiedrich. He is currently finishing a performance diploma at Boston University, where he studies with Bayla Keyes, is exploring the world of historically informed performance on the baroque violin, and is leading and organizing chamber orchestra performances as a concerts.
