UNCSA cello professor Brooks Whitehouse has performed and taught throughout the US and abroad. Prior to his position at UNCSA, he held professorships at University of Florida and UNCG, and Artists-in-Residence positions at SUNY Stony Brook, the Guild Hall in East Hampton, NY, the University of Virginia and The Tanglewood Music Center. As founding members of The Guild Trio he and his wife, violinist Janet Orenstein won both the "USIA Artistic Ambassador" and "Chamber Music Yellow Springs" competitions, and with that ensemble they have performed and held master classes throughout the United States and Canada, as well as in Norway, Turkey, the former Yugoslavia, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Portugal, France and Australia.  


Along with his UNCSA bass colleague Paul Sharpe, Whitehouse is a co-creator of the innovative duo Low & Lower. Since their inception in 2010, their duo traveled the country entertaining audiences with cello/bass chestnuts, both commissioned and original works, vocalizing and storytelling. They have performed together as soloists with the Boise Philharmonic and the Winston-Salem Symphony, and in recital at Interlochen, the University of Michigan, Arizona MusicFest, Garth Newell Music Festival, Mallarmé Chamber Players, the Martha Bassett Show, and Villa Musica (Germany). Low & Lower has inspired new works by Joshua Davis, Bruce Tippette, Ching-chu Hu and John Allemeier, and The New York Magazine called their recent AMR-Naxos recording of David Feurzeig’s Lingua Franca, “More than just funny ha-ha...theatrical, intimate, nimble, layered, refined, and shot through with startling delights.”  

Whitehouse’s solo work includes appearances with the Boston Pops, the New England Chamber Orchestra, and the Nashua, New Brunswick, Billings, and Owensboro Symphonies. He has appeared in recital throughout the northeastern United States, and his performances have been broadcast on WQXR's "McGraw-Hill Young Artist Showcase", WNYC's "Around New York," and the Australian and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation networks.  Mr. Whitehouse is cellist of the Reynolda Quartet currently in residence at the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, and has also performed in the US and China as a member of the Black Mountain Trio.   

As guest artist he has appeared with the American Chamber Players, The Apple Hill Chamber Players, and the Harrington and New Zealand String Quartets, and In 2015 he performed in Carnegie Hall with the Garth Newell Piano Quartet as part of their Fortieth Anniversary Celebration. He has recorded for the Centaur, Naxos, CRI, and Innova labels, and in 2021 his recording of the Elgar Concerto with the Winston Salem Symphony was released for streaming as part of their online pandemic programming.
