DAVID KIRKWOOD Voice Artist-Faculty, tenor Houston Baptist University David Kirkwood is a tenor who specializes in Mozart, early Romantic Lieder, and 20th century British art song of Britten, Vaughan Williams, and Finzi. He has been praised for his “stylish phrasing”--Baltimore Sun, and has been a soloist for companies such as Baltimore Opera Company, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Handel Choir of Baltimore, and the Houston Choral Society.

In his pedagogy, Dr. Kirkwood seeks to mentor the complete performer, where strong technique serves artistry, and likewise where excellence musicianship strengthens technique. His teaching was nationally recognized by his inclusion in the prestigious and highly selective National Association of Teachers of Singing’s Intern Program, North America’s elite vocal pedagogy intensive training program. His students are frequently winners and finalists at NATS competitions, have been accepted to graduate programs such as Yale, Rice, and Indiana, and have been hired for programs like Santa Fe Opera and Pittsburgh Opera.
Conference performance and presentations include “Ur-Dichterliebe: the genesis of Schumann great Op. 48 Song Cycle” at the 2018 National Association of Teachers of Singing Texoma Region Conference at Baylor University.
David holds a DMA in Vocal Arts with cognate fields in Performance, Sacred Music, and Arts Leadership from the University of Southern California, and an MM in Vocal Performance from the Peabody Institute of Music at Johns Hopkins University. His mentors include William Sharp, Lynn Helding, and the late John Shirley-Quirk. In 2014, he joined the faculty at Houston Baptist University’s Department of Music, where he serves as Interim-Chairman and Vocal Program Coordinator. His courses taught include Applied Voice, Lyric Diction, Vocal Pedagogy, Vocal Literature, and even Music Theory. Additionally, Dr. Kirkwood serves as Treasurer for the Greater Houston Chapter of NATS.
David loves to collaborate in recital with his wife, Cordelia Lam Kirkwood (MM Piano Performance, Peabody Institute of Music at Johns Hopkins), and to read and collect great literature, and to read to and play games with his three lovely and talented daughters, Linnea, Eliana, Adeleine.
